The relationship between teachers and students is a critical factor in the academic motivation, engagement and learning of students. Students who feel their teachers are supportive, approachable with a tendency to listen to them emotionally show eagerness to learn, tend to participate more in classroom activities and ultimately they perform better academically. This paper investigates the effects of quality of teacher- student relationships on student academic motivation in secondary school. The research design used was a mixed-method research design, which used questionnaires and semi-structured interviews to collect quantitative as well as qualitative information. The quantitative data were evaluated with the help of descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, and comparative charts, whereas qualitative answers to the questions were discussed with the help of thematic analysis.
